The department of Transportation’s Traffic Safety Section will be hosting a two-week seatbelt enforcement targeting teen drivers and their occupants from Feb. 24 to March 7.

According to Kansas Department of Transportation, Kansas lost 43 teens (ages 13-19) in crashes, with 74 percent of those teens not properly restrained in 2012.

In 2013, that number dropped to 33, with 57% unrestrained.

The numbers continue moving in the right direction when education and enforcement of the law are emphasized, but as one sheriff said, he is “tired of attending funerals.”

In an effort to increase seatbelt compliance, this seatbelt enforcement event is targeting high school students.

Law enforcement across Kansas will be extra vigilant when patrolling around schools.
