Scholars’ Bowl sought to improve their record at the Phillipsburg Invitational. And improve they did, bringing home a final record of 4-2.

The meet was held on Jan. 21 at Phillipsburg High School. Competition was divided into two pools of seven teams each, with the top two teams in each pool advancing to the semifinals. Hays High competed against Plainville, Russell, Smith Center, Thunder Ridge, Trego and Logan, narrowly slipping to third in pool play after a loss to Russell, then Smith Center in rounds two and three.

Both teams advanced to the semifinal rounds.

“Personally, I thought it was a good meet and went over well,” freshman Hannah Norris said.

Junior Sarah Rooney had a similar perspective.

“I was glad to have some easier competition,” Rooney said.

Sophomore Trenton Potter agreed.

“It was nice to have a few wins here and there,” Potter said.

Senior Samantha Rohleder felt they pulled together as a team.

“We tried a lot and worked hard,” Rohleder said.

Sponsor Cheryl Shepherd-Adams was pleased with her team.

“I was really happy with how much faster they were on the buzzers,” Shepherd-Adams said.

Next action for Indian Scholars’ Bowl is in Norton on Feb. 3.
