Winter sports kicked off on Monday, Nov. 18, as boys and girls basketball, boys swimming and wrestling all started practices.

Basketball started off with two-a-days, starting at 6 a.m. and then having another practice after school.

The basketball programs at Hays High are starting the season with two new coaches. Coach Alex Hutchins took over the boys program after one year of coaching the girls. The girls program also has a new coach, Kyle Porter.

The first games for boys and girls varsity basketball teams are on Dec. 5 at home for the Gerald Mitchell Hays City Shootout, and the first games for the junior varsity and freshman teams are on Dec. 17 at home against Colby.

Boys swimming started practice after school on Monday, and they have a new coach as well, Jane Rorstrom.

Boys swimming will kick off their season with a meet at Salina South on Dec. 5.

Wrestling also started their season on Nov. 18, with a new coach, Heath Meder.

Wrestling will begin with a girls meet on Dec. 6 at Valley Center, and the boys will compete in their first duals on Dec. 7 at the Campus High Invitational.

All four winter sports are starting the season with new coaches, with is unusual for Hays High.
