The boys basketball team battled and won against the Dodge City Demons on Jan. 30. The ending score was 60-53, and the Indians now have an overall record of 10-3.

Ending the first quarter up 15-14, the Indians managed to hold their slim lead and fought hard against Demons for the next three periods. Entering the final quarter with a 44-38 advantage, the Indians then scored 16 points, outdoing Dodge City’s 15.

At the start of the game, senior Brady Werth needed only 16 points to become Hays High’s all-time leading scorer. At the time, he had 1,010 points and needed 1,025 to tie Matt Stramel, who graduated in 2006. Over the course of the game, Werth matched and broke the record, scoring a total of 24 points. The season’s not over yet and Werth has a whopping 1,034 points in his high school career.

Drew Young and Isaiah Nunnery put 10 and eight points on the board respectively. Shane Berens added seven, Cash Hobson added six, and Maddux Winter added three. Keith Dryden rounded out the scoring with two.

The Indians next game is Feb. 3 at Salina South.
