Girls golf team wins regionals, headed to state

On a day that was less than ideal for golf, the Indian golf team battled winds up to 40 mph to win the Class 4A Regional Golf Tournament at Larned on Oct. 13.

“The girls played extremely well for the conditions,” Coach Mark Watts said. “Wind gusts would blow the ball off the green on some holes.”

Despite the adversity, the golfers cruised to the regional championship with a team total of 393, well ahead of Goodland with a 449 and TMP with a 453. Other team scores were Larned 462, Colby 467, Pratt 482, Ulysses 483, and Holcomb 484.

Individually, Lexie Schaben fired an 18-hold total of 95 to finish first overall. Katie Brungardt was two shots off the pace and took second with a 97, one stroke better than fourth-place medalist Taylor DeBoer with a 98. DeBoer was tied for third with Logan Perryman of Goodland, but came up short on the third playoff hole.  Fifth medalist went to Rhian Patterson with a 103. Elissa Jensen also finished with a medal as she took 10th with a 108. Also competing for Hays was Macie Mayo with a 125 for 29th place.

The golfers will travel to Kansas City to compete for the Class 4A state title on Oct. 20
