Soccer falls to Garden City in opener, 4-1

The boys soccer team opened the season with a 4-1 loss at Garden City on Sept. 2.

Thirty-six minutes into the game, the teams were locked in a scoreless tie, which frustrated Garden City while please Indian coach Jim Maska.

“I liked the way we played for the first 36 minutes,” Maska said. “We were working the ball, moving it and spreading them out. For just one minute, we had a letdown.”

Maska was referring to two quick Buffalo goals in the 36th and 37th minutes that provided Garden City a 2-0 halftime lead. After the intermission, senior Logan Renz sent a long kick from the left 25-yard line off a free kick and senior Nathan Romme headed it into the goal to cut the score to 2-1 in the 51st minutes.

Maska said the Indians had a couple of more good scoring opportunities but fell short. The Buffaloes, meanwhile, scored two more times seal the 4-1 victory.

For the game, the Indians had four shots on goal compared to 12 for Garden City.
