Football opens season with 12-10 victory

Senior quarterback Alex Delton capped a 94-yard fourth-quarter drive with a one-yard run to give the Indians a 12-10 victory at Olathe Northwest Friday night.

The game was played on a wet field and that seemed to hamper both squads offensively. Hays got on the board first when junior Connor Rule carried the ball in from two-yards out. The PAT failed, giving the Indians a 6-0 advantage.

The touchdown was set-up by a 50-yard punt return to the two-yard line from senior Hayden Kreutzer. A couple of penalties and a sack moved the ball to the 20, but senior Brenden Ibarra ran 18 yards on third-and-goal from the 20 to set up Rule’s touchdown.

Olathe made it 7-6 later at the half after scoring on a nine-yard touchdown run.

After the intermission, Olathe took a 10-6 midway through the third quarter and clung to that lead until Hays scored in the fourth quarter enroute to the final score of 12-10.

Next action for the Indians will be Friday at rival Great Bend, where Coach Bo Black coached for 13 years before coming to Hays this year.
