One golf stroke may not sound like much, but it proved to be a significant difference to the Indian golf team in its season-opening tournament at the Smoky Hill Country Club.

The Indians compiled a nine-hole total of 194, which was one stroke better than Garden City and resulted in a first-place finish. Hutchinson finished third with a 205, followed by TMP with a 213. Other team scores were Great Bend, 224; Salina Central, 226; Dodge City, 242; and Liberal, 257.

Individually, senior Elissa Jensen took second with a 45, one shot off the pace set by individual champion Danielle Gaspar of Garden City. Junior Taylor DeBoer carded a 47 for fourth place, while sophomore Rhian Patterson was sixth with a 50. Sophomore Katie Brungardt fired a 52, followed by seniors Lexie Schaben and Macie Mayo with 57s. Senior Summer Smith also competed but was not part of the team scoring for the Indians and she shot a 56.

The golfers will travel to Salina Central for a 3 p.m. tournament on Sept. 9.
