Indian wrestlers look forward to new assistant coach

His adrenaline is pumping; his body begins to jump up and down and sweat drips down his red face.  The heat in the room becomes well-known.  The thing is, he isn’t even the one wrestling.

Tommy Edgmond, who was a three-time state champion from Goddard and a National runner up at FHSU, will now be helping to coach the wrestling team.  He started wrestling when he was in seventh grade, but really grew to love the sport during high school.  Right now, Edgmon is working on finishing up college.

“His experience and success as a wrestler will have a huge impact on our program,” wrestling coach John Hafliger said. “His knowledge, work ethic and enthusiasm for wrestling are amazing.”

After seeing Indian wrestlers go to camps in the summer, Edgmon said he realized they were willing to go the extra mile and put in some work.

“After hearing that last season the team qualified 10 people but only brought home one state placer made me excited for this year,” Edgmon said. “For this year I’m hoping to have multiple state placers, and maybe even a state champ.”

Edgmon is well-known by Indian wrestlers.

“He’s taught me a lot already,” junior Derek Stiles said. “He wrestles me and then tells me what I need to work on.”

Stiles said he looks to Edgmond for advice because he knows what he’s talking about.  Stiles was a state qualifier last year, and is looking to go back again this year to place.

“I think Tommy is going to be able to help me do that,” Stiles said.

“I would have to say the expectations for wrestling are high,” Hafliger said.  “We have nine returning state qualifiers from last year’s regional championship team.  For the first time in many years we have a team returning with experience.”

Hafliger also said the keys to success for the 2010-2011 team will be getting wrestlers in proper weight class so that they can have the strongest team possible, staying healthy, and working harder than anyone else in the state.
