Boys soccer loses tight one

It was the second time of the year that Dodge City, ranked 10th in all classes, and Hays, ranked fifth in 5A, would meet.

This time, with a score of 3-2, the game was an a lot closer match-up between the two teams than the first 4-1 thrashing that Dodge City handed Hays the first time they met.

“Our intensity level was good; I liked the way we played,” head Hays High school soccer coach Chris Michaelis said.

The game winning goal was scored by Dodge City senior Aaron Arredonodo with 1:13 left in the game. Arredonodo beat Hays High junior goalie high and near post from within six yards of the goal.

Dodge took the early lead, scoring first in the ninth minute on a goal from junior Vincent Estrella.

Hays High then bounced back scoring two goals to take a 2-1 lead. The first goal was scored by junior Ebu Camara in the 22nd minute with an assist from freshman Jordan Windholz and the second was by senior Devin Schmidt in the 27th minute on bullet of a free kick low and near post.

In the 35th minute, Dodge City tied the game on a goal from junior Victor Rojas, making it 2-2 going into halftime.

The game was a hard fought game between both of the teams.

“I thought we played good and should’ve won, we outplayed and outworked them,” Hays High sophomore Ethan Fort said.

For the most part the team agrees that there was one big momentum shift in the game.

“I think the momentum changed when Devin scored on the free kick in the first half,” Fort said.

Even though Hays High is 9-4, Michaelis and the whole team think there is still room to improve.

“Communication I think is probably one of the biggest things we need to work on, the quickest improvement is if we can do that effectively,” Michaelis said. “Probably some other areas we still need to improve on our ability to work on our accuracy and place kicks.”

Dodge City is still in the hunt for a share of the Western Athletic title if it can beat Liberal when they face each other. Hays is looking to win out the regular season to secure home field advantage throughout regionals in the post-season.
