On March 5, 40 German I and II students, as well as two drama students, attended the opera “Die Fledermaus” at Friends University.

Students arrived in Wichita at 9:30 a.m. and watched the three-hour long opera and returned to Hays at 4 p.m.

“Die Fledermaus” is an operetta by Johann Strauss, and it consisted of three acts.

Some students who went included sophomores Matthew Bollig and Anneliese Marecic and freshman Sheena Klaus.

“I enjoyed the opera very much,” Klaus said. “It was something new that we went to, and it was another way to learn about German culture.”

Bollig and Marecic also enjoyed the opera and said they found it funny and exciting.

“I liked the culture and scenery of the opera,” Bollig said.

Substitute German instructor Codi Fenwick’s goal for this field trip was to give students another opportunity by going to Wichita and watching the opera.

The following day in class, the students discussed what happened in the three acts and the plot of the opera.

“I would definitely go on another trip like this because it was a good opportunity,” Klaus said. “It was different then our normal class day. We didn’t just have to read from a book. It also gave us a better understanding of what an opera is like.”
