The most recent Hays High Site Council meeting was held Wednesday, Jan. 9.

To start off the meeting Site Council president Rob Kennemer had all of the attendees introduce themselves.

Next advisors from the Academic, Athletic and Music Booster Clubs spoke on recent and upcoming events.

JAG-K spoke about the Battle of the Badges Blood Drive they held over Christmas break and Helping Hands talked about Project Prom to Remember that they are hosting at Big Creek Crossing on Feb. 23.

Then math instructor Dustin Dreher talked about the mathletes and how they did at the Fort Hays competition.

“I’d like to give my mathletes some recognition, they took first place at the 2018 FHSU Math Relays in November,” Dreher said.

Next vocal instructor Alex Underwood talked about the eight students that were selected to go to the Kansas All-State Choir in Wichita this February after anonymous auditions.

Spanish instructor Matthew Whitney spoke about the opportunity foreign language students will have to attend a Mexican-American concert at FHSU this march.

DECA members Lauren Kent and Landon Dinkel are co-chairing the Creative Marketing Project this year and as part of their project a DECA member will read an inspirational message with the announcements every day this month.

Then Student Council president Peyton Thorell spoke about some past and upcoming events for students.

The Dodge For a Cause Tournament raised $1550 for Cory Burton and his family and StuCo members delivered it to the family on New Years Eve.

It has been decided that this year Indian Call will have a western theme and it will be more casual than formal.

The meeting then concluded with a report from principal Martin Straub.

He explained why students have to check in their devices over school breaks.

“It makes the students have less screen time and let’s staff see the condition of their devices,” Straub said.

Straub talked about the positions the school will be hiring people for within the next year. They will be hiring people for two science positions, retiring teacher Bill Gasper’s journalism position and a special education position.

Two new sheds are being built, one behind the teachers parking lot for storage and the other near the end of the “E” building to house the new kiln.

“There is no reason to throw stuff out, a shed is needed and being presented to the school board,” Straub said.
