DECA students were given the opportunity to volunteer at annual Turkey Trot event, hosted by the HRC. “It is a good opportunity for community service hours,” instructor Shaina Prough said.

The Hays Recreation Commission (HRC) hosted the annual Turkey Trot, a 5 kilometer or 10 kilometer race, on Nov. 3.

The HRC asked students participating in DECA to volunteer to do jobs in the event.

“Some other organizations help us facilitate and make sure the runners have a safe place to run in,” instructor Shaina Prough said. “Basically the winner of each category receives a turkey that they can use at either Thanksgiving or Christmas time.”

The event was expected to take a couple of hours to run.

“Students were spread out among the course to provide first aid assistance, water and make sure they get around the course safely,” Prough said. “It is a good opportunity for community service hours for the students.”
