An addition to the welding room was purchased on Aug. 23, after the department received a grant for a new plasma cutter.
“I received an email from Peggy Torrens at the Kansas State Department of Education (KSDE),” instructor Nathan Howard said. “It was for a grant and I filled out paper work, I had to get the administrator’s signature.”
Howard said the department was originally giving only two grants, but decided to give a third to Hays High.
The grant was just short of $30,000.
“The plasma cutter is used for cutting steel,” Howard said. “We do not have power to it yet.”
Howard’s welding classes will be using the cutter for projects out of steel and aluminum.
“The whole thing will be a learning experience,” Howard said. “It was like Christmas to us. The students are very excited.”
