How old is too old for candy?

It’s almost that time of year again.  The weather is cooling off, there’s a smiling jack-o-lantern on every front porch in town, and kids are deciding who or what to dress up as this year for Halloween.

Among all of the chatter, you realize you haven’t even decided what you want to be yet, and then it hits you and you ask yourself, is this finally the year that I might be too old for this?

Each year the decision whether to dress up and trick or treat intrigues the minds of many teenagers.  Some students believe there is a definite age limit where this childlike holiday tradition of disguising yourself, going out, and gathering candy should end.  Others believe that you should get out and have a good time, because after all, you only live once.

“I do not believe there is an age limit on how old you can be to still trick or treat,” senior Bailey Zimmerman said. “I still trick or treat myself.”

But sophomore Spencer Greathouse disagrees.

“Well, I think there is an age limit to an extent,” Greathouse said. “Such as, I think I’m too old to be dressing up as a real character. I just think once you’re past 11, then you should think about not going all out.”

While not going trick or treating may take away some part of your Halloween fun, there are plenty of other ways to have a great time Halloween night.

“My plans this year are to dress up in a costume and take my siblings around the block, and then afterwards go out with my friends,” Zimmerman said.

While some students are planning to go out and possibly party, others prefer to do something a little more low-key, like volunteering.

“I am going to be helping our church with our annual Trunk or Treat, where people decorate the trunks of their cars and kids go around the parking lot to the different cars for candy,” Greathouse said. “I will be helping out with the games we have.”
